ABSTRACT

Anum, Adelina. 2014. The Influence of Using Mind Mapping Technique Toward Students’ Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text at the Eleventh Grade of SMA N 2 Metro Academic Year 2013/2014. An Undergraduate Thesis. English Education Study Program Faculty of Education and Teacher Training. Muhammadiyah University of Metro. Advisor: 1.Dr. H. Sudirman AM. M.Hum., 2. Syaifudin Latif. M.Pd.

Key words: Mind Mapping, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text.

The objective of this research was to investigate whether there is significant influence of using Mind Mapping Technique toward students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. The subject of this research was two classes, in each class consists of thirty students of SMA N 2 Metro in Academic Year 2013/2014. The experimental design applied in this research (Nonequivalent Control Group Design). The reseacher divided two classes into experimental group and control group. A pre test and post test were administered for both the experimental and control group. In collecting data, the researcher used multiple choice as a test to comprehend the text, especially narrative text. This test was to know the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text. In this test, every student had to read and comprehend the text and answer some questions related to the text. Every answer was given score “0” for wrong answer and “1” for the right answer. So if the students finish the entire test correcty they would get 100 score. To analyze data, the researcher used ttest formula. The researcher get the result of ttest is 5,05 and ttableis 2,66 (on criterion 1) and 2.00 (on criterion 2). It means that ttest>ttable. And the criterion of ttest is Ha accepted if ttest>ttable. Based on the criteria for testing hypothesis was if the value of t test is higher than t table, the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and hypothesis alternative (Ha) is accepted. After viewing the result of T-test formula, the researcher concluded that “there is significant influence of using Mind Mapping Technique toward students’s reading comprehension in narrative text at the eleventh grade of SMA N 2 Metro Academic Year 2013/2014."
