RIZKY BUNGA VANIA : THE COMPARISON OF STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION IN NARRATIVE TEXT BY USING STAD AND NUMBER HEAD TOGETHER METHOD OF ELEVENTH GRADES IN SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1 METRO ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

Reading as one of the four skills has always been as a part of the syllabus in instruction of English. Based on the Pra survey, reading comprehension of the students in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Metro is still low, most of them still lack knowledge of reading comprehension in narrative text, and the quality of English language lessons in English reading comprehension in narrative text is still low. There are two methods presented as a solution in this research. They are STAD Method and NHT Method. The objective of this research is to know the difference result of using STAD and NHT method in increasing narrative text and to know whether STAD and NHT method can be effective to increase narrative text of the students in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Metro at the eleventh grade. The method of investigation is held through quantitative research. The researcher uses true experimental research. In this experiment, the researcher applies true experimental control group pre test and post test design. The research was conducted in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Metro in academic year of 2013/2014. The population in this research is 158 students. It consisted of 6 classes and each class of samples consist of 30 students. The researcher took 52 students from total population as the samples, 26 students was as experimental class and 26 was as control class that match based on classification of students level. The researcher uses cluster stratified random sampling as technique sampling. To analyze data, the researcher uses T-test formula. The researcher got the result of Thit is 3,38 and Ttable 2,70. It means that Thit > Ttable. And the criterion of Ftest is Ha accepted if Thit > Ttable. So, there is any difference result of students’ reading comprehension in narrative text using STAD and NHT, and NHT method is more effective method than STAD method toward students reading comprehension in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Metro in academic year of 2013/2014. The researcher expects that English teacher can use NHT method in reading instruction especially in narrative text, so the students feel fun and enjoy in following the learning process.
