"ABSTRACT

Surianti. 2014. The Comparison of Students’ Reading Comprehension by Using Think Pair Square (TPSQ) and Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review (PQ4R) Techniques At Tenth Grade of SMA N 1 Rumbia Academic Year 2013/2014. An Undergraduate Thesis. English Education Study Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty. Muhammadiyah University of Metro. Advisors: (1) Prof.Dr.H. Marzuki Noor,M.S. (2) Refa’i, M.Pd.

Key Words, Comparison of, Students’ Think Pair Square (TPSQ), Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review (PQ4R), Reading Comprehension.

Reading is necessary when students need to acquire knowledge and learning new information. Based on the Pra survey, reading comprehension of the students of the tenth grade of SMA N 1 Rumbia is low, the teacher knowledge about TPSQ and PQ4R techniques still low, and the learning process of reading is not interesting to students. There are two techniques presented as a solution in this research. They are TPSQ and PQ4R techniques. The objectives of this research are 1) To find out the students’ score of TPSQ technique seen by the result of the post test. 2) To find out the students’ score of using PQ4R technique seen by the result of the post test. 3) To find out there is different of students’ reading comprehension between TPSQ and PQ4R techniques. 4) To find out which technique is more effective to the students’ reading comprehension between lerning by using TPSQ to PQ4R techniques. The method of investigation is held through quantitative research. The design in this research is quasi experimental design. In this experiment, the the researcher applies pretest-posttest control group design. The research is conducted at tenth grade of SMA N 1 Rumbia in academic year 2013/2014. The population in this research is 224 students. It consisted 7 classes and each class consist 32 students. The researcher takes 64 students from total population as the sample, 32 students as experiment class and 32 as control class. The researcher uses cluster sampling as technique sampling. Based on the calculation, the hypothesis can be accepted because Tcal is 4,19 and Ttableis 2,00 on the criterion 1 and also Ttable was 4,19 and Tcal is 2,66 on the criterion 2. It is shown that the hypothesis of Hais accepted and Hois rejected. It mean that there is any different result of using TPSQ and PQ4R techniques toward reading comprehension, TPSQ technique is more effective of students’ reading comprehension, there is significant insteraction between reading comprehension, and learning technique."
